Karina Longworth Presents: Wait Til The Sun Shines, Nellie
December 6, 2018 @ 7:00 pm
Author and podcaster Karina Longworth of You Must Remember This joins us for a screening of the 1952 film Wait Til The Sun Shines, Nellie. The event is co-hosted by AFS Artistic Director Richard Linklater and coincides with the release of Longworth’s new book, “Seduction: Sex, Lies & Stardom in Howard Hughes’s Hollywood.” The screening will be followed by a discussion with Longworth and Linklater. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the event.
The rarely screened film is a showcase for luminescent leading lady Jean Peters, who features prominently in the book as one of Howard Hughes’s many loves. In the movie, directed by Henry King, she plays a young wife who, when called to submerge her own ambitions in life for her husband’s sake, instead rebels. As Longworth writes, “Throughout her time on screen, Peters is fierce and feisty. When Nellie gets mad, Peters spits out a rage that feels uncomfortably naturalistic, like a precursor of the type of acting Gena Rowlands would be doing under the direction of her husband John Cassavetes, in the 1970s.”
