By Laura Mayes
Mom 2.0 Summit co-founder Laura Mayes has made a positive impact on mothers with her event that brings together bloggers, entrepreneurs, content creators and makers to facilitate conversation about working and raising children. The annual gathering of thousands of mothers aims to delights its participants. “It’s a party and a place to network and feel welcome,” says Mayes, who is one of seven incredible Austinites recognized in Tribeza’s People Issue for their work in our community this year. Mayes compiled a list of gift ideas for Austin moms that are all made by Austin moms. And, once again, her aim is to delight all the wonderful mothers in your life.
There are 10 million options for things to get people for the holidays. But if you’re like me, you mostly ignore all of them and go to Amazon at last minute and type in “Gifts for a mom,” where your search delivers bad inspirational mugs, worse jewelry and really weird wall hangings. Why are these the options? This not what your favorite mom wants. If you think it’s ugly, a mom thinks it’s ugly. Trust me on this. So what do you get a mom? Why not look to other moms and what they’re putting out there in the world. That way you give to a mom twice. Here are some options from Austin moms, to Austin moms:
Give Her the Moon and the Stars
Emily Bolf and Becca Stephens are twin sisters who make candles to celebrate the feminine connection to lunar phases and celestial events. For the line, which launched to mark the solar eclipse of August 21, 2017, the sisters create custom-blended fragrances that are inspired by natural elements and rituals. Each candle is 100 percent hand-poured soy wax, burns for approximately 50 hours and carries an intention that encourages a journey towards abundance. And ‘tis the season for that.
Give her 1,000 Words, Times 1,000
Is your favorite mom in love with her phone but totally clueless about how to take good pictures with it? Don’t just give her a photo, teach her how to photo. And photo well. Jill Krause, local content creator, author, visual storyteller and a master photographer, will teach your favorite mom not only how to take a great photo but also how to edit it. Picture Play is a 161-page, instant digital download ebook with photography tips as well as free and cheap apps to take and edit photos and up her Instagram game. And it’s a game changer.
Give Her the Spirit of Gloria Gaynor
Your favorite mom needs a break. She also needs tools to survive the holiday season. We suggest the Waking Giants Holiday Survival Kit, part of a movement started by local moms Martha Pincoffs and Sera Bonds to bring calm, laughter and inspiration into this holiday season so your favorite mom will be grounded and ready to connect. This one is a winner with a Keanu Reeves prayer candle by Flambeaux, art by Christina Hurt Smith, Awkward Family Bingo by Wendi Aarons and Hand Wringing Cream by Folk Potions. And that’s just the start. Chase that with Waking Giants toolkits as a quarterly subscription that starts shipping in January.
Give Her Snacks for Her Soul
Austin mom De J. Lozada has small boys who loved popcorn, but she didn’t love the chemicals and artificial ingredients that came with the snack. So, she set out to create a better, tastier option without all the hidden yuck. And thank goodness she did, because now we have Soul Popped Gourmet Popcorn. In just 3 years, Soul Popped is already disrupting the popcorn snack industry and they have a growing list of awards and recognitions to prove it. And Austin is now home a great, local Soul Food-inspired snack option. Flavorful for the whole family!
Give Her Sassy Beverage Accessories
‘Tis the season to drink, and drink with style. And nothing calls for stylish drinking accessories like family holiday events. Luckily we have a lovely local option. What started as an obsession with vintage needle point pillows has evolved into a budding enterprise for this mother of two called August Morgan. Kate Hersch has mastered the coupling of irreverence with elegance, producing a delightful line of hand-embroidered linen cocktail napkins, perfect for any and every occasion. And there are a lot of occasions to celebrate this season. So many drink options, so many beverage napkins.
Give Her the Opportunity to Get Exactly What She Wants
When all else fails, outsource to the source. Founded by Austin native Sara Rodell, Loop & Tie allows a gift-giver to select a price range and curated slate of gifts from which the recipient may choose. Or choose to allocate toward charity! And because Sara is from Austin she has a lot of great local brands on Loop & Tie. It takes seriously less than five minutes to purchase, they’ll handle all the shipping. And in the end, your mom won’t know how much you spent. It reduces waste and increases happiness since your favorite mom gets to pick her own gift.
