‘Alter Egos’ Photo Exhibit by Dave Creaney Premieres at Modern Rocks Gallery

The collection features some of Austin’s finest creatives and will be on display for one night only

Dave Creaney, an Austin-based portrait and documentary photographer, will exhibit work from his recent collection, Alter Egos, from 7 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 15.

The esteemed photographer’s one-night-only show will be held at Modern Rocks Gallery in East Austin. Free and open to the public, the photography exhibit offers a look into Austin’s signature artistic energy.

Alter Egos showcases 14 intimate, colorful and playful portraits of some of Austin’s most prominent creatives. Subjects include musicians Kalu James of Kalu and the Electric Joint, Carrie Fussell of Calliope Musicals, Spencer Gibb, Sara Houser and visual artists TV Head and Jackson Montgomery Schwartz.

What started as an idea to showcase Creaney’s new studio space organically evolved into a larger collaborative effort between the subjects and photographer. The result is a series of photos that capture the colorful characters of the artists, each portrait demanding the attention of viewers.

“Each model personally chose what color they wanted to embody and self-styled based on their ‘larger than life’ personas,” shares Creaney. “The project organically transformed into the idea of the subjects’ alter egos — a monochromatic series using the colors of the rainbow to express themselves.”

The models featured in the display are friends and acquaintances of Creaney. Each participant got involved in the project by virtue of Austin’s small and connected art scene.

Modern Rocks Gallery presents curated collections of rock ‘n’ roll photography, emphasizing high quality prints and sourcing directly from photographers themselves in an effort to recognize the art of rock photography and to help maintain the rights of its practitioners.

“Having focused on the classics with our recent Bowie and Rolling Stones exhibits, I’m really looking forward to showcasing Dave’s work in the gallery,” shares Steven Walker, owner of Modern Rocks. “The pictures are so vibrant and beautifully shot. Having so many local musicians and creatives on the walls is the perfect way to close out the year.”

Catch the special presentation of photos from 7 to 10 p.m. tonight at the gallery, which is located at 916 Springdale Road.
