Broadway hits and music icons

“This season represents everything I love about Broadway—bold new shows, beloved favorites and stories that speak to everyone,” said Texas Performing Arts Executive and Artistic Director Bob Bursey in the announcement.

First up is “Mrs. Doubtfire,” opening in September. The musical adapts the beloved film about an out-of-work actor who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny in order to stay close to his children after a divorce.

Music-driven productions are a major part of the lineup. “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical” traces the life and career of the Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter whose hits include “Sweet Caroline” and “Forever in Blue Jeans.” The Tony and Grammy Award-winning “Buena Vista Social Club” brings the acclaimed Cuban album to the stage through a story rooted in Havana’s musical history.

Broadway in Austin shows in 2027

In early 2027, “Hell’s Kitchen” arrives in Austin. The musical, inspired by the life and music of Alicia Keys, follows a 17-year-old girl growing up in New York City as she searches for independence and identity, set to a score that combines Keys’ songs with new material written for the show.

Other productions include “Water for Elephants,” adapted from the bestselling novel about a young man who joins a traveling circus, and “Death Becomes Her,” a musical comedy based on the 1992 film.

The season concludes with “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the Tony Award-winning play that continues the wizarding world story through Harry Potter’s son and an unexpected friendship with Draco Malfoy’s child.

Additional productions returning to Austin include “The Phantom of the Opera,” the long-running musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Also returning to Austin are “Waitress,” the musical about a pie maker seeking a new start; “Beetlejuice,” based on the film by Tim Burton; and the nine-time Tony Award-winning musical comedy “The Book of Mormon.”

Presented by Texas Performing Arts, the performing arts center for The University of Texas at Austin, Broadway in Austin brings touring Broadway productions to Central Texas each year.
