In the heart of Texas, a unique theater program continues to transform passionate students into confident professionals, both on and off the stage. Summer Stock Austin (SSA) includes a mix of high school performers, college students and seasoned talent from across the nation to present high-quality musicals. Now in its 21st season, SSA brings the magic of “Mary Poppins” and the raw power of “Jesus Christ Superstar” to the local theater scene.

An experience like no other

At this tuition-free program, students do more than memorize lines. They receive hands-on training in every aspect of theater-making. Participants dive into stagecraft, marketing and fundraising, and they witness the collaboration required to bring a show to life in just a few weeks. One day might be spent deep in rehearsal, the next cold-calling businesses for sponsorships, and then back to choreography. It’s a six-week sprint to showtime. The immersive process mirrors the Mr. Miyagi approach: small tasks that build into something greater. Once the fundamentals are in place, a quiet confidence begins to emerge.

“I’m way more prepared now,” says Sophia Zavala, a San Marcos native and musical theater major at Northern Michigan University. “I know my lines, I bring what I need, I have a plan and an order.”

This summer, she returns to SSA ready to reconnect with familiar faces and welcome new ones. When asked about her favorite part of the process, she doesn’t hesitate.

“Definitely the dancing. It’s so connected to the story, and I love being in rehearsal, doing what I love with people who love it, too.”

Back to where it began

This season, Zavala appears as Miss Andrew in “Mary Poppins” and understudies Judas in “Jesus Christ Superstar”— a role that connects her with one of SSA’s most accomplished alumni, Donelvan “Donny” Thigpen, who returns to play Judas.

With nearly 20 SSA productions under his belt, Thigpen has gone on to star in Las Vegas’ “Purple Reign” as Prince, appear in numerous commercial campaigns and earn acclaim in stage roles. He’s equally excited to return, reflecting with gratitude on the full-circle moment.

“It feels like I was just there in their shoes doing these things. I remember what it felt like to be a teenager trying to navigate the world,” he says.

Thigpen’s connection to SSA runs deep. During high school, he met SSA producer and artistic director Ginger Morris, who quickly became a mentor.

“She didn’t treat us like we were kids. She held us to the same standard as any professional actor,” he says.

At her suggestion, he auditioned for SSA and eventually earned a nomination for Best Leading Actor in the Heller Awards. Years later, Thigpen partnered with Morris to co-found the non-profit Impact Arts Foundation.

Tailoring the theatre

Each SSA production is shaped around its participants, beginning with the audition process.

“They pick a song based on your voice and style,” Zavala says.

Thigpen adds, “It’s like getting a tailored suit, custom-fit for the people in the room.”

That philosophy carries through to casting. SSA doesn’t look for perfection; it looks for potential.

“We want students who are willing to take risks,” he explains. “Sometimes they land roles they never imagined and discover something new in themselves.”

This blend of personal growth, professional standards and artistic excellence defines Summer Stock Austin. As another season takes the stage, the program once again proves that theater’s real magic lies in the people who make it—and the future they inspire.

This summer’s performances include “Mary Poppins” from July 25 to Aug. 10, and “Jesus Christ Superstar” from Aug. 2 to 10.
