Zach Theater is pulling back the curtain on a magical, reimagined version of “The Wizard of Oz.” Playing now through September 21 in The Topfer, this isn’t the traditional take on this musical classic — it’s a theatrical adventure. From immersive staging and aerial arts to toe-tapping cowboy hoedowns, here are five reasons why you won’t want to miss “The Wizard of Oz” at Zach Theater:

1. An Immersive Staging

Zach’s signature “Zach360” experience transforms the traditional theater staging into something immersive and unforgettable. Performed in the round, this version of “The Wizard of Oz” will have action happening all around you – with yellow brick roads winding through the seats and interactive moments bringing you into the world of Oz.

2. “The Wizard of Oz” with Western Flair

What happens when you take Munchkinland and turn it into a boot-stompin’ hoedown? Or when a cowboy and cowgirl band kick things off with 1930s-style tunes? Director Dave Steakley is infusing this beloved story with a charming Texan vibe.

3. A Stellar Cast of Local Talent

The cast brings together a mix of beloved Zach veterans and exciting new talent to Austin’s stage. Leading the way is Texas State student Moira Poh, who shines as Dorothy Gale with her standout vocals. Ryan Everett Wood’s Cowardly Lion is as lovable and charismatic as the classic film version, delighting audiences with every roar and whimper. Raphe Gilliam’s Scarecrow stands out with his incredible physical acting, capturing every wobbly step and fall with effortless charm. Connor Coughlin’s Tin Man delivers a tap-dancing moment that’s an absolute treat, adding flair and rhythm to the journey down the Yellow Brick Road.

4. Production Value That’s Pure Magic

From sparkling bubbles for Glinda to the vibrant poppy field, the design team has crafted a visual feast. Scenic design by Stephanie Busing, costumes by Susan Branch Towne, and lighting by Benjamin Gantose all promise to bring the fantasy world of Oz to vivid life. Additionally, the inventive use of aerial artists adds a special excitement to the show.
