Valentine’s Day Picks 2018
Tribeza Online Exclusive
Showing your love to someone is one of the most special things you can do, but it isn’t always simple. Sometimes you really have to go the extra mile. We are letting you in on some of Austin’s coolest Valentine’s Day happenings—for when candy hearts just aren’t enough. It’s up to you, though: how do you want to spend your special day?
I want romance!
There’s a reason we give flowers as gifts year after year. Thanks to ceramic artist Keith Kreeger and florist Carly Blair, now you can make this time-honored gift extra special. These two are coming together to create the perfect floral arrangements presented in a limited collection of pink and gold vases. Online orders available until February 9, with pickup on the 13th and 14th. Shop them here.
South Austin’s favorite victorian house still has everything you’d expect—the open spaces, the peacocks, the idyllic charm. But just as special is what’s new. Fresh food awaits inside an equally fresh interior at Mattie’s, which serves classic and comforting dishes that hold on to a southern sensibility. Cozy and elegant, it’s a wonderful spot to choose to spend your evening.
Grab your second and cruise down to the Blue Starlite Drive-In Theater any day between now and February 14 to catch some old favorites in the moonlight. Features in this series include classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Grease, and The Princess Bride. You can stay in your car for the true retro experience or grab some outside seating. Tickets available here.
A perfect pick for Francophiles and night owls alike, Justine’s has all your favorite dishes you can’t quite pronounce. Happily, this hot spot stays open late – feel free to linger with your date and enjoy another drink by moonlight.
I want excitement!
It’s no secret that Austin food can take you by surprise in the best way possible. One of the newest and most notable establishments that fits this description is Kemuri Tatsu-Ya, which creates a Texas-meets-Japan experience like no other. They’ll be offering a special prix-fixe Valentine’s dinner bound to knock your socks off. Reservations are required and are $85 per person.
The heart-stopping acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil finally meet the ice. Go and be dazzled together! This show arrives on the 14th, just in time for your date night, and will stay through Sunday the 18th. Tickets found here.
You can never outgrow this classic retro toy and sweet shop. Just be careful—once the action figures and ice cream cones grab hold of your inner child, you may never want to leave! Stop by as a part of a stroll through the 2ND Street District which will, of course, have an answer to any of your food or shopping desires.
I want to relax!
There’s no better way to unwind than with a day at the spa. Hiatus’ Valentine’s day specials are out of this world. Give the gift of an all-day retreat or go together for a couple’s massage. Learn about their packages here.
Give a gift that will make your partner feel good, look good, and (of course) smell good. Check out the luxurious oils and scrubs from Olive + M. They’re local, all natural, and created to make you glow. Visit their website here.
Not everything your Valentine’s Day dinner needs can be found on the menu! Sometimes the perfect pairing with your food is a little live music. Between the special Valentine’s Day menu and the bright jazz vocals of Julie Slim, Juliet is the perfect and not-too-fussy place to be on the 14th. No tickets needed, so don’t sweat it!
I want to celebrate on my own!
Going solo but still looking to have a good time? Use this Valentine’s Day as an excuse to hit the town on your own and check out the Lamar Union Valentine Shmalentine Bash. Up on the sky deck of the Union you’ll find music by Tameca Jones, food from Shake Shack, shopping from KiKi Nass, and so much more. Event partners will even be sponsoring giveaways. Learn about it here.
How to make happy hour even happier? 80s movies, of course. Forget a date; grab your friends and pull up to Irene’s this Thursday where their weekly Vinyl Happy Hour will feature tunes from Pretty in Pink. If you want the full experience, hang out on the patio from 7-9 p.m. and watch the movie while indulging in special drinks and sweets. Cross your fingers for a lucky raffle ticket!
