Whistle Pig
Even though WhistlePig is only a decade old, it’s the most awarded Rye Whiskey maker in the world. And, it’s obvious why they won the San Francisco World Spirits Competition ‘Best In Show Whiskey’ title last year. The Vermont-based brand is located on a remote 500 acre farm, so they can experiment with blending and finishing. But most importantly: their simple rules that have contributed to their success: 1. Protect what makes Rye Whiskey great, 2. Toss out the rest, and 3. Make it better. Sounds like a solid plan to us.
Clyde Mays
It’s good to know that some things stay true to their roots, like Clyde May’s Whiskey. To create his proprietary finish, he added oven-dried apples to his barrels, which smoothed out his amber whiskey. Even today, during the bottling process, a subtle hint of apple is folded into 4-year minimum aged straight bourbon. We’re fans great originals, which is why Clyde May’s Whiskey, Original Alabama Whiskey, is one of our favorites. Did we mention, at the start, Clyde kept one eye on his still and the other looking over his shoulder for the law? Yeah. We appreciate rebels, too.
Westland
Boasting 2017’s Master Distiller and American Single Malt of the Year, Westland distillery mashes, distills, matures and bottles American Single Malt Whiskey in the heart of the Pacific Northwest: Seattle, WA. When Matt Hofmann co-founded Westland in 2010, the brand set out to create an entirely new category of whiskey. And that’s what they did. Distilled from the rich, flavorful barley of Washington State and matured predominantly in new American oak casks in the steady, cool humidity of our seaside home, this whiskey is a testament to that vision. Move over coffee culture, there’s a new uniquely American single malt in town.
Bruichladdich
Bruichladdich was built in 1881 on the wild Scottish island of Islay, where the distillery still uses the same original Victorian equipment. How’s that for vintage? On the shores of Lochindaal, the whiskies spend their entire lives maturing in premium American Oak. Made from 100% Scottish barley, these trickle distilled single malt whiskies are governed by sight, sound and smell senses — all of which, we sense, are just perfect.
High West
In 2006, High West began with humble roots, opening a small, 250-gallon, copper pot still and saloon in an historic livery stable and garage in downtown Park City, UT. It became the first legally licensed distillery in the state since 1870. Now based in Wanship, Utah, Whiskey Advocate’s 2016 “Distiller of the Year” is known for their American Prairie Bourbon and High West Double Rye, and their Rendezvous Rye flagship whiskey. Whether served neat, with a little water, or on the rocks, we are are fans of the full, uncompromised taste of authentic rye whiskey. Wine Enthusiast agrees and rated it 96 points.
Cooper & Thief
When we aren’t drinking whiskey, we turn to whiskey-influenced wine. Cooper & Thief is a distinctive red-wine blend of Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Sauvignon—all mingling with bourbon-inspired flavors and aromas. Cellarmaster Jeff Kasavan ages the wine for three months in bourbon whiskey barrels, which gives way to soft, velvety tannins with a subtle heat. The end result is a rich, dark, “jammy” flavor, with toasty vanilla notes and a long, lingering finish. Cooper & Thief doesn’t taste like other red wines, because it’s not other wines. It a blend “born of mischief.”
Bird Dog
When it comes to flavored whiskies, Bird Dog has a ton of options. Blackberry, Peach, Apple, Strawberry, Ruby Red Grapefruit, Hot Cinnamon, Jalapeno Honey, and Chocolate, are a few hailing from Bowling Green, KY. We love them for their varieties, and because they also make a line of craft Kentucky bourbons – Small Batch, 10-year-old, and Select Stock – that are committed to quality. And, naturally, we’re drinking quality whiskey.
