Austin celebrates Pride Month in August with festivals and ways to give back

Austin Pride Month is celebrated annually in August, and we’re sharing some unique events and activities happening this month to support the LGBTQIA+ community. Below, you’ll find opportunities to join the festivities at two big festivals, as well as a spotlight on nonprofit organizations that can use support all year round.

Austin Pride Parade & Festival

One of the city’s most vibrant celebrations, the Austin Pride Parade & Festival returns on Saturday, August 23. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., head to Fiesta Gardens for a full day of live entertainment and performances. This year, festival tickets are free and all ages are welcome. It kicks off at the Texas State Capitol Building at 8 p.m. and marches down Congress Ave. ending at 4th/Bettie Naylor.

The Front Fest

Future Front Texas presents a four-day, multi-venue celebration spotlighting women and LGBTQIA+ artists, running August 28–31. Each day offers a distinct experience: an opening night swim at The LINE Austin (Aug. 28), a music showcase at Antone’s Nightclub (Aug. 29), a film festival at The Contemporary Austin’s Laguna Gloria (Aug. 30), and a Labor Day pool party and closing celebration back at The LINE (Aug. 31).

Tickets are available for individual days or the full weekend, with proceeds supporting the Creative Future of Texas Fund.


Austin LGBTQIA+ Nonprofits to Support All Year Long

Equity Texas

With a mission to eliminate discriminatory legislation towards LGBTQIA+ populations, Equality Texas brings people together to create political action. Participants can assist by attending events, pledging to vote, volunteering, donating and educating themselves further on unjust matters regarding the queer community. Equality Texas gives Austinites a chance to be part of the fight to ensure safety and inclusion for all people of Texas.

allgo

Promoting artistic expression, health and wellness and social justice, allgo is a grassroots organization focused on progress for queer people of color. Get involved by volunteering at their creative events and performances, joining the event planning committees, writing newsletters, facilitating workshops or donating to sustain these projects.

Out Youth

This organization secures bright futures for LGBTQIA+ youth by providing programs and services around Central Texas that offer emotional and material support. With counseling and resources like groceries and hygiene products available, Out Youth ensures that these young people have a positive self-image and a caring community to fall back on at any time. Contribute to their efforts by donating.

PFLAG Austin

This local chapter of the national non-profit organization offers free, confidential support groups for LGBTQ individuals and their loved ones in the Austin area. PFLAG Austin champions diversity and acceptance through outreach to schools and communities, providing support, education and advocacy to ensure the well-being and equal rights of LGBTQ individuals and their allies.

Austin LGBT Coalition on Aging

The Austin LGBT Coalition on Aging aims to enhance the well-being of LGBTQ older adults through advocacy, research, education and services. It brings together representatives from community organizations, service providers and interested individuals to address the unique challenges faced by this demographic.

GLSEN

GLSEN, founded in 1990, prioritizes supportive educators and student-led movements like the Day of Silence. They conduct research, develop resources and advocate for policies to protect LGBTQ+ and marginalized students, including supporting acts like the Safe Schools Improvement Act and combating discriminatory laws in over 15 states.
