Winter break doesn’t always have to mean boarding a plane for far-off fun. This year, our family discovered that the perfect holiday getaway was practically in our own backyard in San Antonio at Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa, a Hill Country retreat that manages to feel both energizing and restorative while offering loads of local entertainment, too.

A Refreshed Resort

Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa is a luxury retreat with sweeping views of the area’s rolling hills and the San Antonio skyline. Rebranded under the Signia by Hilton portfolio in October 2025, a $40 million renovation was completed in May, resulting in a refresh of all 496 guest rooms and suites. Designed by Looney & Associates, the updates emphasize modern comfort inspired by the resort’s 550-acre Hill Country setting featuring natural stone, warm woods, and a soothing color palette.

In addition to the resorts’ traditional guest rooms, the property also offers elevated stays, including SEVEN, their adults-only floor with a private lounge and concierge, and The Villas, an enclave of 34 rooms and suites with dedicated golf carts. You can enjoy extensive amenities, including the championship La Cantera Golf Club, five heated outdoor pools, the 25,000-square-foot Loma de Vida Spa, and a wide range of family-friendly activities. Choose from nine dining venues on property, including Signature, a Michelin Guide–recommended restaurant serving French-inspired Texas cuisine.

Proximity to Six Flags at Shops at La Cantera

One of the biggest wins during our winter break was the resort’s proximity to Six Flags Fiesta Texas (open through Jan. 4). The park is close enough that the resort offers a complimentary shuttle to and from, eliminating the need to navigate traffic or parking. Even better, La Cantera provides a perfect vantage point to see Six Flags’ fireworks show right from the resort, a surprisingly magical way to end the day.

For the shoppers in your family, Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa is conveniently located about a mile from the upscale shopping and dining at The Shops at La Cantera, making it easy to explore retail and restaurant options. The resort also offers a complimentary shuttle service to and from The Shops that guests can arrange through the concierge or front desk.

Skate or Swim

Adding to the appeal was the unusually warm winter weather, which gave our family the bonus of pool time. We had the opportunity to lounge and soak in sunshine and Hill Country views.

The holiday season brought even more festive touches to the resort. The Jingle Bell Roll, a holiday roller-skating rink, has popped up on the property through Jan. 4, and gliding (or wobbling) around the rink offers a joyful added amenity.

New Wellness Offerings

If you don’t have time to squeeze in a trip with the family during winter break, take note of one of the resort’s exciting new wellness offerings to plan a future visit: Saddle Up and Spa is an experience designed for travelers craving both adventure and relaxation. The journey begins on horseback, with a guided ride through rolling Hill Country trails, so you can slow down and reconnect with nature. From there, the experience transitions seamlessly into indulgence at the Loma de Vida Spa. A custom massage followed by a deeply immersive sound bath aims to harmonize the mind and body.

Whether you’re planning a family-friendly winter escape or a wellness-focused getaway, Signia by Hilton La Cantera Resort & Spa continues to prove that you don’t have to go far to feel truly away. For us, this winter break surprised us with just enough adventure to keep everyone happy.
