What
Opening May 29, Le Calamar is the latest project from Claudia Lee and Richard Hargreave, the duo behind Underdog, one of The New York Times’ top Austin restaurants. This time, they’ve teamed up with chef Casey Wall, who returns to the U.S. after 15 years in Australia to open a French bistro with Texas roots in a relaxed, thoughtfully designed space on South First.
Menu highlights include steak tartare with house-made pain de mie, grilled trout in guajillo-infused brown butter, and playful desserts like the “baked Texas” with pecan, banana, and local honey.
The wine list, curated by Hargreave, leans French, Mexican, and Texan, with a focus on small producers and terroir-driven bottles, while the cocktail program centers on martinis, manhattans, and mezcal.
Designed by Bruce Curtis, the 3,000-square-foot interior features dark concrete floors, olive walls, and a Western-inspired instrumental soundtrack that subtly ties together the restaurant’s French-Texan identity.
Reservations can be made on OpenTable. The restaurant is open on Sunday and Monday from 4 to 10 p.m., Thursday from 4 to 11 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to midnight.
