What

The Loren Hotel and The Contemporary Austin are delighted to present a new mural “Man Who Fell to Earth” on December 10 as a part of the hotel’s continued dedication to supporting local artists and the community. The mural’s public celebration will feature remarks from the mural’s artist Manik Raj Nakra, food from Dosa Shack, a presentation from Austin Reptile Shows, and face painting.

Commissioned by The Contemporary Austin, “Man Who Fell to Earth” is curated by Alex Klein, head curator and director of curatorial affairs. Nakra and Klein collaborated throughout the year-long process from inception to final production. As his most ambitious composition to date, Nakra draws inspiration from the Greek myth of Icarus, portraying a scene where exotic animals, including a snake, a rat and a leopard at the center, observe events unfold. The mural’s title pays homage to the 1976 film “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” starring David Bowie as an alien in search of water for his home planet, offering a canvas open to interpretation, whether as a commentary on imperialism’s environmental impact or a hopeful vision of a landscape returning to nature.
