What

The Driskill embraces its history all year long, but Halloween is an especially alluring time to check out the downtown Austin hotel. Explore its 138-year-old halls with a daily history tour at 4 p.m. where locals can imagine the grand hotel as it’s existed throughout the decades, finding its oddities, secrets, and little-known stories.

Attendees may discover stories from the hotel’s past like the tale of Jesse Driskill (who built the hotel in 1886) and is still frequenting it today, making his presence known by the scent of his cigar smoke. A life-sized portrait of Jesse Driskill was purchased by the hotel after his death in 1890 and now presides over the opulent lobby. Sightings of partygoers dressed in elaborate ball gowns and tuxedos have also been reported walking off of elevators in the hotel – on nights when there haven’t been any galas on the property. Afterward, head to the famous Driskill bar for a bat-inspired cocktail: the Batini.
