Hakeem Adewumi

Hakeem Adewumi is a Nigerian American photographer and creative director who describes his work as “harmony and peace through the lens of a black, gay man.” In 2017, Adewumi participated in the Fulbright Scholar Program and spent nine months in Johannesburg, South Africa, gaining new perspectives and working on his craft. While there, Adewumi was attacked in a hate crime. After leaving a bar with a friend, strangers pursued them, shouting homophobic slurs and eventually stabbing Adewumi. The assault inspired his latest exhibition, “There Are Lifetimes Here. In the Body.”
