Slacker 30th Anniversary Celebration Includes Cast Reunion in Austin
A celebration of Richard Linklater’s film is part of a summer of screenings at The Paramount Theatre and AFS Cinema
Slacker is turning 30. The iconic film — a breakout success for writer and director Richard Linklater — is an undisputed cult hit and an Austin classic.
Shot right here during the summer of 1989, the movie premiered two years later in 1991. It stars Linklater, Rudy Basquez, Bob Boyd, Teresa Taylor and Mark James, among others.
The portrayal of young people living, working, studying and pursuing love at the end of the last century helped make Slacker a defining film for our city and Gen X.
To celebrate the milestone, The Paramount and Austin Film Society are joining forces for a special screening that will double as a cast reunion. At the intimate event, which will take place July 13, more than 25 members of the cast and crew will join Linklater at the for a reunion and live Q&A at The Paramount Theatre on Congress Avenue.
There are even more reasons for Austin film fans to get excited. The screening will also celebrate the reopening of Austin Film Society’s art house theater, AFS Cinema, on July 15. Plus, the lineup for The Paramount Theatre’s 46th annual Summer Classic Film Series is jam-packed with incredible titles, including what they’re dubbing “new classics” like Get Out and Mulholland Drive.
