Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center Welcomes ‘Field of Light’ Exhibition
Visitors can purchase tickets for artist Bruce Munro’s illuminated art experience
UPDATE: The exhibition dates have been extended through May 2023.
London-based artist Bruce Munro, known for his world-renowned light-focused installations, will bring his “Field of Light” exhibition to Austin’s Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center this fall. Hosted in collaboration with C3 Presents and the Wildflower Center, tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on July 19.
Inspired by his appreciation for whimsical natural light and curiosity regarding shared human experiences, Munro’s work showcases the intersection of art, technology and nature in an effort to inspire visitors to consider a kinder and more connected world.
Utilizing a collection of 28,000 stemmed spheres powered by solar fiber-optics, the display will illuminate 16 acres of the Texas Arboretum’s natural landscaping with mesmerizing color-changing bulbs.
“Austin is such a unique destination that embodies many of the core values of this installation,” says Munro. “The Wildflower Center is the ideal venue for this exhibition simply because it brings people, art and nature together.”
This rhythmic light will create an immersive experience for guests, inspiring a feeling of shared existence and a sense of being a part of life’s essential pattern.
“The shifts of color and light will be a unique and provocative way to celebrate our Central Texas landscape,” says Lee Clippard, executive director of the Wildflower Center.
Visitors will not only have the opportunity to view Munro’s breathtaking work, but are encouraged to enjoy the accompaniment of local food and drink vendors to make a full evening out of it.
The exhibit opens Friday, Sept. 9 at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and will be open from 6:45 to 10:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through Dec. 2022, with tickets available for purchase starting at 10 a.m. July 19 at fieldoflightaustin.com. Entry times to the event will vary based on the time of sunsets. Tickets start at $41 for adults, with a portion of proceeds benefitting the Wildflower Center.
