Where To Find The Best Breakfast Tacos in Austin
When it comes to starting your day off right in Austin, a breakfast taco is a non-negotiable part of the equation. Our city’s favorite morning meal can be found at countless restaurants, trucks, and cafes, so finding the best of the bunch may feel like a daunting prospect. The good news is that we’re here to share our ten favorite Austin venues for perfectly-crafted breakfast tacos.
Veracruz All-Natural
Multiple locations
An iconic mini-chain of food trucks that’s been feeding grateful Austinites for over 15 years, Veracruz All-Natural serves a wide array of exceptional tacos, but breakfast is where they really shine. Their Migas taco features a flawless balance of egg, tomato, onion and tortilla chips, and the optional add-ons of roasted poblano peppers and refried beans make the original taco even more filling and flavorful. Meat eaters will love the El Sancho, a gut-busting taco with egg, chorizo and melty Monterey Jack cheese. Don’t forget to dress your tacos up with Veracruz’s zippy house salsas; the spicy Rojo is especially worthwhile.
Trippy Tacos
4205 Menchaca Road
1224 S Lamar Blvd.
The Veracruz All-Natural outpost at Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin counts among its busiest, and it’s not uncommon to wait 30 minutes or more for your order. Should you find yourself in the area desperately craving a great breakfast taco without a wait, head across the street to the gas station parking lot on Menchaca Road that’s home to Trippy Tacos. This laidback truck (which has a second location on South Lamar Boulevard) takes their breakfast tacos very seriously, and everything on their menu is as tasty as it is reasonably priced. Their Potato, Egg, and Cheese taco is classic and satisfying, and we also love their hearty “On the Fly”, a signature taco with refried beans, bacon, cheese and avocado.
Pueblo Viejo
Multiple locations
With an East Riverside brick-and-mortar and trucks at hotspots like Cosmic Coffee and Meanwhile Brewing, Pueblo Viejo is a firmly established taco powerhouse in Austin. Their breakfast menu includes several creative takes on a standard breakfast taco, with highlights like the Taco Bueno (chorizo, egg, potato and cheese) and the Taco Margarita (egg, onion, spinach and mushrooms). And here’s a pro tip: order one of Pueblo Viejo’s excellent horchatas to wash your tacos down!
Papalote
2803 S Lamar Blvd.
Taco aficionados in Austin regularly praise Papalote on South Lamar Boulevard for its fresh and bold fare inspired by interior Mexican traditions. While the lunch and dinner menu is rightfully beloved, don’t sleep on Papalote’s breakfast offerings. Their A.M. tacos follow a choose-your-own-adventure template; every taco comes with a corn or flour tortilla and eggs, and from there, you can choose to add meat (like chorizo, bacon or chicharrones), vegetables (like cactus, mushrooms and poblano pepper) or a combination of both. This customization lets you make exactly the taco you want to fuel you up for the day.
Moreno Barbecue
5608 Menchaca Road
Because we’re in Austin, a breakfast taco that features smoked meat needs to make an appearance on this list. Luckily, Moreno Barbecue in South Austin hosts a Sunday Breakfast service from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and a star of that menu is their The 45 Breakfast Taco. This hefty taco comes wrapped in a housemade beef tallow tortilla and contains eggs, Moreno’s famous brisket, bacon, potatoes, refried beans and cheese.
Granny’s Tacos
1401 E 7th St.
East Austinites heap praise on the Granny’s Tacos truck for its unpretentious vibe and high-quality tacos. While it’s hard to go wrong with any of their menu items, the MVP has to be the Chilaquiles Taco. Crunchy tortilla chips are cooked in a rich and intense mole sauce and then nestled in a flour tortilla with cotija cheese, minced onion and a pickled jalapeno for extra heat and tang. It’s a bold burst of flavor that’s sure to wake you up.
Nixta Taqueria
2512 E 12th St.
If their James Beard Awards and Michelin recognition aren’t reason enough to check out Nixta Taqueria, this buzzy East Side spot’s breakfast menu should do the trick. Their masterful housemade tortillas make Nixta’s tacos the stuff of local legend. If you visit on a weekend morning, you can get these perfect disks loaded up with eggs, duck-fat refried beans, chorizo, queso fresco, salsa and avocado crema.
Tacos Guerrero
96 N Pleasant Valley Road
At an unremarkable-looking orange truck off of North Pleasant Valley Road, East Austinites can order some of the finest and least influencer-baiting tacos in the entire city. Tacos Guerrero is a one-woman operation, and chef/owner Yolanda Guerrero makes exceptional carnitas, bistec and al pastor tacos. But we like Tacos Guerrero best for their breakfast menu. The classics like potato, egg and cheese, and migas all hit the spot perfectly, but more adventurous diners should add a nopales-and-egg taco to their order. The grassy and slightly tangy flavor of the cactus is an excellent match for the richness of egg yolks, and adding some of Guerrero’s zesty green salsa makes this a truly memorable morning meal.
Dan’s Hamburgers
5602 North Lamar Blvd.
4308 Manchaca Road
844 Airport Blvd.
This local mini-chain may be better known for its burgers and curly fries, but Dan’s Hamburgers also makes no-frills breakfast tacos that are quick, easy, and very satisfying. For less than $10, you can get three heavily stuffed potato, egg and bacon tacos that will keep you full and happy until lunchtime and Dan’s drive-thru turns them into a highly convenient A.M. option.
Ken’s Tacos
9408 Dessau Road
Northeast Austinites in need of some serious breakfast taco action regularly head to Ken’s Tacos on Dessau Road. This long-standing taco purveyor (and sandwich shop) allows you to build your own tacos with ingredients like egg, potato, cheese, chorizo, beef and much more. They also feature a handful of specialty tacos on their breakfast menu; we’re especially fond of their beautifully-traditional bean and cheese taco.
