New Austin Restaurants to Put on Your Radar

Just-opened eateries offer sustainably-caught seafood, New American cuisine, shareable bites and exciting bar games

Austin’s food scene is as diverse as its music culture. There’s no shortage of interesting restaurants and food trucks to try, and new ones are arriving all the time. Here are three of our favorite recently-opened eateries, and a fourth that’s coming later this summer.

Keepers Coastal Kitchen

Keepers Coastal Kitchen is named after a fishing pier in Port Aransas, Texas, with a popular bar, grill and bait shop attached to it. Located on West Slaughter Lane, Keepers offers sustainably-caught seafood in a casual, family-friendly space. Highlights from the South Austin eatery include Viet-Cajun Seafood Boils and the Coastal Seafood Dip, made with blue crab, shrimp, roasted corn relish and cream cheese, served with a side of tortilla chips.

Bull & Bowl

Located downtown on West 6th Street, Bull & Bowl is a fun place to eat, drink and play games with friends. The new restaurant says it’s the first duckpin bowling alley, bar, bistro, arcade and mechanical bull venue ever established. In between rounds of Southwestern-inspired craft cocktails and billiards with your pals, try one of Bull & Bowl’s burgers—piled high with American cheese and fresh toppings, or the Chicken Fried Ribeye: a fried 10oz prime ribeye served with whipped potatoes, green beans and black pepper gravy.

Featuring front and back patio dining (with indoor seating opening in the fall), 1417 offers gourmet New American cuisine in an elevated outdoor space. The restaurant is named after its location, 1417 South 1st Street, and makes breakfast, lunch and dinner with thoughtful wine, beer, cocktail and dessert options. Highlights from the dinner menu includes Duck Confit Crepes and the Halibut—served with smoky eggplant, Castelvetrano olives, Bagna càuda and blood orange.

Bonus: Tiki Tatsu-Ya

Keep an eye out for Tiki Tatsu-Ya, slated to open next to Ramen Tatsu-Ya on South Lamar in the coming weeks. The bar and restaurant is inspired by Tiki culture, and says it will offer unique interpretations of tropical drinks and shareable bites that blend Hawaiian, Polynesian and Japanese influences. With a fun and inviting atmosphere, Tiki Tatsu-Ya plans to transport locals to an island adventure, all without having to leave the heart of South Austin.
