UT Alum and James Beard Award-Winning Food Writer Joe Yonan Celebrates New Cookbook With Austin Events

Texas native and 'Washington Post' editor and cookbook author visits Austin this week with special dinners, classes and events in support of his new book, 'Mastering the Art of Plant-Based Cooking'

Raised in Texas and an alum of the University of Texas at Austin, Joe Yonan returns to his hometown September 18 – 22 to support his latest cookbook, Mastering the Art of Plant-Based Cooking. Two-time James Beard Award-winning food editor and writer for the Washington Post, Yonan has also penned four cookbooks that celebrate plant-based foods. With his expertise in this cuisine, he has collected recipes and essays from prominent food writers to create a book that shows the true abundance of vegan food around the world.

A Plant-Based Dinner at Olamaie (1610 San Antonio St)
Wednesday, September 18, 5-9pm

Joe and Olamaie are hosting a four-course plant-based dinner, prepared by Chef Amanda Turner and drawing from Joe’s own recipes. Those who love Olamaie’s chef’s tasting will be right at home. Each reservation includes a signed copy of the cookbook. ($150/person; reserve here)

A Plant-Based Happy Hour at Nixta Taqueria
Thursday, September 19, 4-5:30pm

Join Joe for an easygoing happy hour at Nixta Taqueria, where food and drink from the book will be available for purchase, and toast to the book with Chef Edgar Rico. Stick around for dinner afterward where there will be a highlighted special from the book available to order. Each ticket includes a signed copy of the cookbook. ($50/person; tickets here)

Sunday, September 22, 11am-12:30pm

Listen in for a cozy conversation with Joe and cookbook critic and author Paula Forbes. Each ticket purchase includes a reserved seat and choice of beverage from a special brunch menu. Books will be available for purchase with a signing to follow. ($17/person; tickets here + free to RSVP)

Cooking Class at Central Market North Lamar
Sunday, September 22, 5:30-7:30pm

Learn the basics of plant-based cooking with Joe’s intimate, demonstration-style cooking class. Menu includes Caramelized Onion Dip with pita chips, Nearly-Any-Vegetable Coconut Soup, Lion’s Mane Mushroom Cakes with remoulade sauce, and Chocolate Bonbons with Tahini & Berries. Books will be available for purchase with a signing to follow. ($100/person; tickets here)
