For many, the mark of a new calendar year includes embracing healthier habits and learning new skills. Through her new cooking club, Austin-based private chef, Chef Monique Karabach, is eager to share tips for improving your mastery in the kitchen and becoming a meal-planning pro in 2025.

As a reformed picky eater and mother to a three-year-old daughter, Karabach has spent years mastering the art of satisfying even the most discerning palates. Her journey began in 2010 while attending college at St. Edward’s University, and finding herself yearning for the comforting flavors of her mother’s cooking.

From food blogging to offering private chef services to meal prep classes and more

To recreate creamy curries from her childhood kitchen, she donned an apron and began experimenting with various cuisines. Her passion for food quickly grew, inspiring her to blog about some of her favorite dining experiences in Austin, including local gems like Intero, Komé, and Jacoby’s Restaurant & Mercantile.

Monique’s growing food influence and hands-on cooking experience, including cooking for the families she once babysat for, quickly led to the development of her full-fledged career. Today, she offers private chef services, one-on-one meal prep classes, six-week course intensives, and a wealth of tips, tricks, and troubleshooting advice on her website’s blog.

Curious about how to get started in the kitchen? We asked Chef Monique for her top tips to help you succeed—whether you’re just starting out or looking to streamline your meal prep routine.

Chef Monique’s Top 3 Tips for Meal Prep Beginners

1. Start small. Meal prep doesn’t have to mean cooking 10 bland chicken-and-rice meals at once. It can be as simple as creating a short shopping list of essentials and spending just 10 minutes prepping vegetables for the week. For instance, I always wash and dry my leafy greens as soon as I get home, then store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh and ready to use.

2. Batch-prep a few versatile items to use throughout the week. I love tossing a well-seasoned chuck roast or chicken thighs into a slow cooker and letting it do its thing. Then I’ll cook a grain like quinoa, rice, or couscous and roast a few vegetables like broccoli or asparagus. These components can be enjoyed together or mixed into different meals for variety.

3. Not everything needs to be made from scratch. Take the pressure off by using store-bought marinara or salsa—there’s no shame in that! And you don’t need the $10 marinara when the $3 one is just as good. When you’re ready to elevate your skills, my cooking club is the perfect place to find inspiration and support!

Finding joy in the kitchen

Balancing the joy of cooking with the demands of running a business hasn’t always been easy, ‘When you’re passionate about something, time doesn’t exist,’ she shared. ‘Food and cooking is totally my path.’ She continued, ‘You make time for things that are important to you,’ a mindset that helped her stay focused on what she loved most.

When it comes to finding inspiration for her recipes, Monique looks to a variety of sources. She’s inspired by the evolving Austin food scene, searching for unique spices in grocery store aisles, and heartfelt conversations with her mom. It’s these combined moments that continue to fuel her creativity in the kitchen.
