Family Fun or a Couple’s Retreat?

It is with good reason that Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort & Spa is a favorite destination for families with young children. The resort is well-known for its refreshing Lost Pines Water Park that features the very popular 1,000-foot lazy river. Guests of all ages can keep their cool under the stubborn Texas summer sun with a splash in the pool, a float down the river, and a plunge down the water slide. Additional fun for young guests includes a bike ride around the resort’s pathways. Another favorite is a visit to the resort’s onsite corral of goats, miniature ponies, alpacas, and longhorns. Also, no one can resist the nightly s’mores around the campfire.

Regardless of the amazing appeal as a family getaway, we decided to try something entirely different. We recently took a completely kid-free, grownup excursion with a focus on romance, elegance, and ample time to unwind.

Reconnecting on the Renegade Trailhead

With one-on-one time in mind, we approached our visit to the resort with a focus on reconnection, seeking the amenities that would be most serene, soulful, tranquil and restorative to mind and body. Our first pick: horseback rides on the Renegade Trailhead.

In full disclosure, we have very little experience on horseback, but any nervous jitters were immediately quelled when meeting with the friendly and knowledgeable team leading the horses. For safety, you can don an optional helmet that happens to be masked as a rather cute cowboy hat. The staff questions your level of riding experience then pairs you with the perfectly tempered horse to suit your skill set. Then off you go on a ride along the shady trail through rolling hills of countryside. It was a memorable and dreamy experience that is a “must do” at the Lost Pines Resort.

Serenity at the Spa

For a most indulgent and splendid experience, we opted for a couples massage at the resort’s peaceful Lost Pines Spa. The large spa is inviting and open with a comfortable and calm interior. Enjoy delicious baked goods, fruit, teas and assorted beverages as you settle in. Take advantage of the eucalyptus-infused steam room or the muscle-relieving whirlpool. Go for a dip in the tranquil adults-only outdoor pool. There you’ll find an entirely slower energy from that of the Lost Pines Water Park. Choose from a series of signature facials and massage offerings. We were immediately melting into a restorative state during our side-by-side massage — the ultimate way to completely de-stress.

Wine, Dine and Unwind

While traditional steak dinners are certainly expected and treated with culinary respect at this true Texan resort, the dining options at the Lost Pines Resort are varied and interesting — frankly with an unexpected, elevated spin. Upon checking into the resort, we ran into some old friends (as you do just miles from Austin) who were eager to suggest their favorite can’t-miss cocktails at Maude’s. An indoor-outdoor, casual, cocktail-focused concept, Maude’s is named for the expansive pecan tree that sits outside on a large, inviting terrace. You’ll find sharable charcuterie and snack plates along with some inventive and delicious cocktails. Don’t pass up the Apricot Mezcalarita or Maude’s Floral Garden.

For a festive atmosphere and a menu that includes a mix of hearty burgers, large salads, brisket tacos and chicken fried steak, pop into Maverick’s. With a funky Texas roadhouse design and a full bar, it’s a casual, high energy restaurant with plenty of options for all eaters.

For a very special dinner, we made reservations for Stories Ranch Kitchen. This farm-to-table restaurant is located upstairs in the main building of the resort. It boasts a pretty patio overlooking the resort’s grounds. Upon sitting at our table, we learned that the couple next to us was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. Fittingly, this space feels like a truly perfect dining destination for such celebratory and elegant occasions. The menu is inspired by Texas cattle ranches. However, it also features seasonal produce from local farms, as well as decadent desserts.

Carefree at the Cabana

For one last extravagant treat, we enjoyed a posh poolside lounge-about in a lavish cabana. Situated next to the adult pool at the water park, our cabana shielded us from the sun’s rays and included excellent service from the poolside bar and cafe. What a lovely locale for a last splash to round out a wonderfully well-rested weekend!
