Downtown Austin: The Perfect Day, According to Kevin Burns

Urbanspace founder Kevin Burns shares his favorite spots and activities

Kevin Burns knows downtown. He lives there. He plays there. He works there. He builds there.

As the founder of Urbanspace, Burns has helped shaped the Austin skyline and the marketplace for homes in and around it. That makes him an expert on the downtown lifestyle. After all – you ought to know it if you’re going to sell it.

We wanted to find out what constitutes the perfect day for Burns deep in the heart of his neighborhood, which still beats despite the COVID-19-related shutdowns and ongoing coronavirus pandemic in Austin. He gave us a rundown of his favorite activities and places to eat, drink and relax when the weather – and everything else – is good.

Burns says his perfect day starts early – a good way beat the heat if you’re going to be exercising outdoors in the summer. “I like to bike around the trail. There’s a 10-mile loop,” he says, referring to the extensive and beautiful hike and bike trail around Lady Bird Lake.

“I really love how our new space connects with the trail and nature. You have towers all the way around us. If you have a lot of people in these dense buildings and nowhere to go, to explore and enjoy green space, then you don’t have much quality of life.”

Then it’s time to eat, have fun and be social. “We really enjoy brunch at Trace,” he says. “From there having friends over and hitting the pool at the Independent, dinner maybe at ATX Cocina and seeing a show at Stubb’s or at Moody Theater.”
