Shelley Duvall and Erykah Badu Inducted into Texas Film Hall of Fame

The Queen of Neo-Soul and “The Shining” star will be honored at the Texas Film Awards on March 12

Major props are in order for Erykah Badu and Shelley Duvall.

The women will both be inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame by the Austin Film Society on March 12 during a ceremony for the Texas Film Awards.

Badu, a Dallas native, joins other iconic Texan musicians like Lyle Lovett, ZZ Top and The Dixie Chicks, as a recipient of the Soundtrack Award, which honors artists whose achievement in music has crossed over into film and television. Badu’s music – a mix of R&B, hip hop and soul – is associated with various films including the 2016 Oscar winner for Best Picture, “Moonlight.” Known as the Queen of Neo Soul, Badu is also an actress. Her role as Rose Rose in “The Cider House Rules” earned her a Screen Actors Guild Awards nomination.

Duvall was discovered and cast by “Brewster McCloud” director Robert Altman while he was shooting the 1970 film on location in Houston. She went on to star in many movies, including “Nashville,” “Annie Hall,” “Popeye,” “The Shining,” “Roxanne” and “The Portrait of a Lady.” She is an Emmy and BAFTA Awards nominee and won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in 1977’s “3 Women.”

Fifty years after it premiered, “Brewster McCloud” will also be honored at the Texas Film Awards with the Star of Texas Award. Duvall and her co-star Michael Murphy will accept the award and appear at a screening of the film the day before, on March 11, at the AFS Cinema.

“Booksmart” actress Kaitlyn Dever will receive the Rising Star Award at the event hosted by Parker Posey. Musical director for the night, Adrian Quesada, will also perform.

The Texas Film Awards celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with a red carpet and cocktail party before a dinner and the ceremony at Austin Studios. Tickets and tables for the event are available for purchase with proceeds going towards the Austin Film Society’s mission to support Texas filmmakers and boost Austin and Texas as centers for moviemaking.
