Father’s Day Gift Guide for Austin Dads
Give something unique to Dad or anyone worth celebrating on June 21
By Holly Cowart
This Father’s Day is about more than thanking the dads in our lives. This is a time to honor the mentors that have taught us endless life lessons and encouraged our passions; to toast the partners who answered late-night cries; and to recognize the guardians who have provided a pillar of strength through life’s most unpredictable moments.
And while there are many reasons to celebrate a loved one, we are still enduring an unprecedented and difficult time for Austin’s businesses and collective community. As each holiday comes down the 2020 pipeline, it’s clear that this year is going to be just a little bit stranger than we imagined. But one thing still rings true – we’re stronger together.
Whether recovering from the far-reaching effects of COVID-19 or using their platform to uplift others, these Austin-based brands have ensured that dad will receive the perfect “thank you” while you spend your dollar on local businesses.
Toe Cap Boot, $200
Wish fathers good fortune this year with Penny Luck. Alongside stitched leather soles and a durable body, each shoe features a signature penny embedded underneath. Special this Father’s Day, every pair will be discounted to $200 and comes with free customization of the year on the penny and free shipping. The company is also heavily invested in improving the lives of Veterans with PTSD, working year round with organizations like the Purple Heart Foundation and employing those who have served.
Pete Schmidt Black Leather Strap, $86.95
Indie retail shops Toy Joy, Yummi Joy, Wild About Music and Austin Rocks teamed up in May to form ICONIC AUSTIN BRANDS, a joint e-commerce site making available all the classic gifts Austinites have come to love. Meanwhile, the cooperative has partnered with the Austin Council of PTAs to help donate books, games, school supplies and more for local students. After popping over to Yummi Joy for a sweet treat, pick up something for the musically-inclined father, like this Black Leather Strap at Wild About Music, handmade by artisans in South America. No instrument? No problem.
Roo Single Camping Hammock, from $48.30
Is the dad in your life a self-proclaimed outdoorsman? Then look no further than local brand Kammok, specializing in – you guessed it – hammocks. For a limited time, their Camp at Home collection is up to 30 percent off, making it easy to help dad enjoy the great outdoors, even if it’s just in the backyard. Plus, the soft, moisture-resistant Gravitas fabric comes in multiple colors and size options for the whole family to hang.
512 Taco Print by Tim Doyle, $35
South Congress staple Parts & Labour is one of my favorite places to discover prints from local artists. I’ve always enjoyed this piece by Nakatomi Inc.’s Tim Doyle, who playfully captured Austin’s favorite stereotypes for Sally Centigrade’s “Travel By Screen” series. With striking color palettes, the illustrator is also known for his reimagined scenes from iconic films, worthy of lining the walls of any movie lover’s man-cave.
The “DUDE” Box, $45
As if Contigo didn’t work enough magic serving up tasty southern bites daily, they’ve come through yet again with the “DUDE” Box. What do dads like? It gets straight to the point: Tellicherry honey pepper beef jerky, a maple old fashioned kit, smoked allium bbq sauce and “the library” candle from Alaina & Co. When combined, Father’s Day is a win.
Austin Bold FC Essential Black Socks, $22
Why not give dad an upgrade to the quintessential Father’s Day gift? League of Rebels’ collection of official away game gear for soccer team Austin Bold FC includes odor-resistant essential black socks made with bamboo fibre. Whether a sports fan or fan of fashion, this footwear is built to last longer than your average 4-pack and is a simple way to keep dad comfy.
“Austin Table: Recipes from Beloved Austin Restaurants,” $29.95
If the dad in your household also takes on the title of chef de cuisine, this digital cookbook will sharpen their skills while giving 100 percent of proceeds directly back to the Austin restaurants it features. Created by Visit Austin and R/GA, the download offers 24 recipes from local favorites, including Il Brutto’s summery Frozen Aperol Spritz and scrumptious pork shoulder from Sway. He’ll joyfully cook away while you reap the mouthwatering rewards for a true win-win.
Petrified Design Bike Rack, $185
Petrified Design has provided an elegant way to bring the outdoors in. If you know a dad that is all about biking, support his passion while keeping him organized. The shelf is made from steel, natural veg tanned leather and is powder coated to last, with six different color choices.
Father’s Day Box!, $79
Give dad something a little unexpected this year – self care! The Good Hippie has been making Austin homes happy since 2011 and places extra care on the ingredients used in their small-batch, artisanal products. For Father’s Day, they’ve curated a box with Limited Edition Hand Salve for him, Beard Elixir and Center Dwelling Mist for the home, perfect for nourishing the body and soul.
Classic Bifold Leather Wallet, $155
“I noticed that the quality of men’s gifts was lacking the creative caliber of women’s gifts,” writes founder Katrina Marhefka. “Espacio Handmade was forged out of this void.” Along with a slew of leather-crafted lifestyle goods, these wallets serve as a simple and sophisticated statement while delivering functionality. The sustainably sourced leather is burned, cut, dyed and hand-stitched in Marhefka’s studio, where she’s also been collaborating with other local makers to create face shields for medical professionals lacking proper PPE.
Field Book, $26
The Field Book, artfully designed by the team at LAND, is both a versatile and affordable present for dad. Writing is a powerful tool, from reflective deep thoughts to groundbreaking dad jokes, and now he has a dedicated place to jot it all down. But really, you can’t go wrong when it comes to finding something special for the father with a spiritual side.
Smell Good Daily | Tobacco 1812, $42
The scent experts at West Third Brand are offering a gift the whole household will appreciate. With a focus on minimal, earthy blends, the Tobacco 1812 is a best seller with hints of dried fruit and exotic wood alongside sweet dried tobacco leaf, aromatic spices and more. Unsure of what scent to get? Let dad find his favorite with a set of sample vials!
