Mother’s Day Gift Guide
Find something special and unique for the moms in your life
By Holly Cowart
May has arrived, and spring is officially in full-swing. If this is a surprising and slightly jarring wake-up call, I get you. It may have taken forever to get here, but somehow 2021 is full speed ahead, edging us closer to some semblance of normalcy while reminding us a lot is about to change.
The return of local businesses and in-person social gatherings might be dizzying for the calendar, but here’s another important reminder: it’s almost Mother’s Day. And while there’s never a bad time to tell our maternal figures “thank you,” there’s something extra fun about getting to spoil our loved ones on their special day (which, by the way, is Sunday, May 9).
If the gift-getting panic has started to set in, don’t worry! There’s still time to find a present that feels just right. From a quick surprise to hitting the motherlode, let this list help you make your deserving mom’s day.
Austin’s Couch Potatoes
It’s no shock that Austin’s Couch Potatoes is finding a way to celebrate mamas while making a community impact. Twenty percent of proceeds from each purchase of this curated gift set will be donated to Saint Louise House, a nonprofit whose mission is to help women and children regain stability and independence after experiencing homelessness. As for the contents, the local furniture store did not disappoint, offering delightful Austin-based goodies like Srsly Chocolate, a bracelet from Amanda Deer, a Latika Skin Care Bath Bomb and more — plus a $100 Austin’s Couch Potatoes gift card! Pick up is available at the Ben White location from May 7th to 9th.
The Contemporary Austin
Get the art-loving mama something creative while reinvesting locally at The Contemporary Austin’s online shop. While artwork is always appropriate, consider some exhibition-inspired jewelry or home goods, like the lovely Playa Throw from art brand BFGF. The world-class museum is also making the deal extra-sweet for a limited time with discount code MOTHERSDAY20, which gets you 20 percent off all jewelry, books and homewares from now until May 9. Bonus gift: know a sleepless mom with a brand new little one? Check out these insanely cute (and BPA-free!) fruit-and vegetable-shaped baby teethers.
Règime Des Velours
Get mom her next favorite skincare product. Self-care often starts from within, so Règime Des Velours founder Jasmine Marie only uses high-quality ingredients when making this super-soft face serum. Utilizing “antioxidants, vitamins, essential amino acids, Omegas 3-6-9, and discoloration fighting botanicals” found inside nourishing, cold-pressed superfood seed oils, skin is left feeling hydrated, refreshed and ready to take on the day.
What easier way to share a little love than with these dainty necklaces from Austin jewelry maven Kendra Scott. Although each of the nine shades are gorgeous, we chose the apt and elegant Ivory Mother-Of-Pearl. For an added touch of luxury, Kendra Scott’s fine jewelry collections makes a fantastic choice for a spouse or partner who is looking to upgrade with diamonds or gold.
7th Street Candle Co.
Damn, this candle smells good. At least that’s the general review from several recent house guests. Candles are a classic and well-loved gift, and these locally made beauties are the real deal because they smell incredible and actually impact the entire room. Our pick for mom goes to the colorful Wildflower Garden, which features a springy floral aroma and flowers picked by hand right here in Austin. But you may prefer the DIY fun of a candle-making kit, which leaves room for added personalization.
Love Cycling Studio
Sunnier days bring renewed energy to get back outside — or at least to the safety of an air-conditioned gym. Located on West 5th Street, Love Cycling Studio welcomes fitness enthusiasts of all levels, with single class passes starting at $24 and special packages for beginners. Grab one for yourself and become mom’s motivational cycle buddy! Or pick up some new trendy gear from the brand’s online store.
Dallas-based fashion brand Noble 31 released their springtime collection this March, welcoming fresh wardrobe essentials ahead of Mother’s Day that are as equally vibrant as she is. Created by Madi Davis and Mackenzie Moore, real-life best friends, sisters and mothers, the brand empowers women to boldly put their best foot forward in chic fashions that blend effortlessly with casual or formal functions. A little out of your gifting wheelhouse? Go for the gift card!
Dry Farm Wines
When in doubt — there’s always wine. This gift box will make mom’s year with tons of customizable options, from one-time deliveries of reds, whites and rosés to temporary subscription sets. Each delivery is sourced from hundreds of hand-selected Natural Wine labels found at biodiverse vineyards that meet the brand’s strict quality standards. Better yet, if there are any wines that mom’s not jamming with, Dry Farm will either replace the bottle or refund you in full.
