Austin’s Newest Must-Try Restaurant: Roya Serves Modern Persian Cuisine in a Beautiful Setting
Chef Amir Hajimaleki curates the food, space and experience to share the warmth and generosity of Persian culture
Austin welcomes soon-to-be hotspot Roya, an upscale Persian restaurant from acclaimed chef Amir Hajimaleki. After dining there during their soft opening, we can confidently say it exceeded every expectation. What began as a series of pop-up dinners around Austin in 2018 has now blossomed into a elevated brick-and-mortar concept at 7858 Shoal Creek Blvd., and it feels like something truly special.

Date night destination
We were struck by the restaurant’s sophisticated ambiance. Designed by Hajimaleki and his brother and business partner, Ali, the space seamlessly blends contemporary style with rich Persian influences. We ascended a staircase lined with authentic Persian tiles into a dimly lit, moody dining room layered in deep blue tones, dramatic archways, and statement chandeliers. The atmosphere felt intimate, and perfect for a romantic date night or an elevated night out with friends.
The staff thoughtfully guided us through a menu of dishes that were largely unfamiliar to us, offering recommendations and explaining flavors with warmth and enthusiasm. Dishes are meant to be shared, making this a fabulous opportunity to dine with friends, family, or a special someone while sampling a variety of flavors.
Roya’s seasonal menu showcases Persian cuisine through fresh, locally sourced ingredients and modern techniques. Each dish we tried was incredibly delicious. Standouts included the Cauliflower Kebob with black garlic chili oil, pomegranate seeds and black tahini hummus, Wild Mushroom Borani, and the Mahiche Gheymeh with saffron-braised lamb shank.

The Sofreh experience at Roya
A centerpiece of the experience is the Sofreh, a chef-curated, course meal designed to feel like dining in a Persian home.
“Roya is deeply personal for me, it’s a way to honor my family, my roots, and the traditions I grew up with. I’ve been able to learn more about Iran’s beautiful history and culture through Roya, and the best part is I get to share what Persian culture is to our Austin community,” said Hajimaleki. “At its core, it’s about the art of hospitality that’s central to Persian culture. I wanted Roya to feel like being welcomed into someone’s home, while offering a perspective beyond the stereotypes people often see. Through the food, the space, and the experience, we hope to share the warmth, generosity, and beauty of Persian culture.”

Sips and sweets
Desserts are led by Dennis Van, Netflix “Sugar Rush” winner and pastry chef for Hajimaleki’s restaurant group, and they are not to be missed. Try the Pesteh Entrement, a pistachio sponge cake with white chocolate and raspberry gelee and yuzu pistachio mousse.
The beverage program is equally thoughtful, featuring Persian-inspired craft cocktails. We highly recommend the Talla with turmeric-infused bourbon, lemon, and honey.
A lasting impression
After experiencing Roya for ourselves, we can say that Hajimaleki’s vision comes to life in every detail. From the stunning design to the heartfelt hospitality and unforgettable flavors, Roya feels poised to become one of Austin’s most exciting new dining destinations.
