Austin Tex-Mex Restaurant Eldorado Cafe Announces Plans for Expansion

More than a decade ago, a movie and a notebook set Joel Fried on a new path. After watching the 2014 film “Chef” while visiting Dallas, Fried left the theater inspired. On the drive back to Austin, he stopped at a 7-Eleven, bought a notebook and began sketching out ideas for a restaurant.

Years later, those notes became Eldorado Cafe.

Since opening on Aug. 8, 2017, the Mexican restaurant at 3300 W. Anderson Lane has built a loyal following for its breakfast plates and extensive vegan offerings. Now, the neighborhood favorite is preparing for its next phase: an expansion that will nearly double its size.

Eldorado plans to take over the adjacent space formerly occupied by a Krav Maga studio, increasing its seating capacity from about 80 to 150 guests while adding a larger kitchen and second bar.

For Fried and his wife, Joanna, the growth is something they never anticipated when the restaurant first opened.

“We have been working on this for about a year and are still about another year out,” Fried said.

The expansion comes after years of steady growth driven largely by repeat customers and community support. Fried credits much of that success to consistency in both the food and the staff behind it.

Community support

Together with kitchen manager Esme Tejeda, Fried has maintained many of Eldorado’s signature dishes over the years, while several employees have remained with the restaurant since its early days.

That stability became especially important in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced the restaurant to quickly adapt just two years after opening.

Eldorado temporarily closed for a month while the team reworked operations and shifted to a takeout-only model that would remain in place for more than a year. Fried said the priority was protecting both employees and customers, while helping staff navigate the uncertainty of the moment.

“We wanted to ensure everyone, including our staff, was safe,” Fried said.

Even as dining rooms across the city sat empty, customers continued showing up. Fried remembers people placing orders and waiting in the parking lot for the restaurant to reopen.

During that period, Eldorado also leaned into branded merchandise designed by Anne-Charlotte Patterson of Southern Combustion Creative. T-shirts and hats became an unexpected form of word-of-mouth marketing, with customers wearing the restaurant’s logo beyond Austin.

A new path for growth

As restrictions eased and diners eventually returned, Fried remembers one small moment that signaled things were beginning to feel normal again.

“That first day, when I heard the sound of ice hitting the side of a glass at the bar, I knew we were back,” Fried said.

The restaurant later considered opening a second location on McNeil Road but ultimately decided against it.

“We realized a second store wouldn’t solve any problems,” Fried said. “We already had a strong connection with the community that we didn’t want to dilute.”

Not long afterward, the neighboring tenant moved out, creating an opportunity that felt more aligned with Eldorado’s future.

For Eldorado, the next chapter is not about becoming bigger for the sake of growth. It is about creating more room for the community that helped build it.
