Tomar and the FCs Release Sophomore Album, “Rise Above”

Funky soul band Tomar and the FCs are jumping back onto Austin’s music scene with brand new material. Their sophomore album, Rise Above, is a call to transcend the current divisiveness in our country around politics, race and so much more. We caught up with the band’s drummer, Paul Kresowik, who gave a glimpse into how they have evolved sonically since their last project, life after a record deal and what the future holds.

Since their 2016 album Heart Attack was released, Tomar and the FCs’ sound has undergone numerous transformations. Kresowik lists a change in songwriters, the elimination of horns and the addition of more blues and rock elements as major factors. He also commends Houston-based record label, Splice Records, for supporting the bands creative process and not confusing music for money. “At a smaller label, it’s really a labor of love,” the drummer notes.

Throughout the album one can find a clear message of unification. Kresowik explains that while the title track, aptly named “Rise Above,” started as a more intense record, it has softened with time. “At a time when things are so split, I find it refreshing to have some areas of life that we can hide around. Not that music can’t be political at times … but it’s good to have a space to enjoy it without some of that division.”

As for what’s next for the band? Kresowik shares, “The primary goal is to keep working on recording more music. In fact, we’ve already been demoing some songs for the next project.” He and his comrades also plan to embark on a tour this year.
