The Shabby Slips owner digs warm earth tones and textures like clay and sand
Sara Scaglione is the force behind Austin’s Shabby Slips, the interiors destination on West Sixth Street. Overflowing with timeless, clean slip-covered pieces, European antiques and more modern accessories, the store easily represents Scaglione’s own leanings toward a more classic look. To add depth to spaces, her go-to is texture, playing up a handful of complementing materials and fabrics. One of her latest projects, which is featured on Tribeza’s Interiors Tour 2020, is for a long-time client and features a warm, rich family room with leathers and walnut and an airier living room with unexpected details like a snake blanket and bright yellow artwork.

What’s your favorite album or musician to pull out for an impromptu dinner party?
Amos Lee early in the evening and then Beyoncé.
What’s TV show or film is most inspiring in terms of design?
Netflix’s “The Politician.”

Round top! It’s right in our backyard, although Marche Clingnancourt is such a treat.
What are three design trends you love right now?
Warm earth tones and textures like clay, sand and camel colors, large-scale wallpaper and natural, casual velvets for upholstery.
Is there a design trend you’d like to see fade away?
I’ll be glad to see less pink in designs.
Flowers or succulents and what kind?
Cherry blossoms.

Painted on 21st Street. I love looking at the abstract art created by this American woman artist, Helen Frankenthaler. The colors are vibrant but soft and large-scaled.
