National Sumo Championships Taking Place in Dripping Springs
The U.S. Sumo Federation is holding their big event at Dreamland this Saturday
Are you looking for something different to do? Well, the National Sumo Championships are taking place this Saturday in Dripping Springs.
Dreamland, an outdoor entertainment and recreation venue, is hosting the 2021 event held by the U.S. Sumo Federation, whose mission is to share the sport with as many people as possible. The U.S. championships taking place this weekend will be the start of a journey to the World Championships for male and female athletes in weight classes that range from light- to heavyweight.
In addition to the sumo wrestling competition, which begins at 10 a.m. with the lightweight divisions and lasts until the closing ceremonies at 3 p.m., Dreamland is celebrating Japanese culture across all 64 acres of their property.
Spectators will also be able to see demonstrations of the Japanese martial arts of Kyudo (archery) and Kendo (swordsmanship with bamboo swords and protective shields), enjoy Taiko drum performances and try Japanese foods.
Tickets for the 2021 National Sumo Championships are just $20 with VIP seating available for $50. Previews are taking place at Dreamland on Friday, June 17, at 7 p.m.
Dreamland has also an extensive collection of murals and sculptures, pickleball courts and miniature golf courses so you can partake in some friendly competition among your non-sumo wrestling friends.
With craft labels from more than 50 regional breweries, beer drinkers won’t go thirsty. And to celebrate Father’s Day, dads get their first pint free of charge in the Dreamland taproom. Once the sumo champions are honored, stick around to watch the first home game for Austin FC on the big screen at 8 p.m.
Dreamland is located at 2770 West Highway 290 in Dripping Springs.
