For 25 years, Austin City Limits Music Festival has grown from a homegrown celebration of music into one of Austin’s defining traditions. In 2002, it debuted as a monumental expansion of the beloved PBS show’s legacy, with tickets for just $25. Over the years, ACL Fest has expanded, evolved and welcomed generations of fans to Zilker Park—from its early days to two-weekend lineups, surprise sets and unforgettable performances from some of music’s biggest names.
But for all the changes, the magic has stayed remarkably familiar: both legends and new artists waiting to be discovered, friends dancing in the grass, great festival fashion and food—and the unmistakable feeling that anything can happen at ACL Fest.
To celebrate 25 years of music and memories, here are 25 reasons we’ll always love ACL Fest:
1. The music. We’ve had twenty-five years of discovering new favorite bands—and seeing legends in the same weekend.
2. The Zilker Park setting. There’s something uniquely Austin about dancing in the grass with the downtown skyline in the distance.
3. The surprise factor. You can arrive for one artist and leave obsessed with someone you’d never heard of before.
4. The genre-hopping. From country to hip-hop, indie rock to EDM, folk to R&B—you can make your schedule as eclectic as you want.
5. Love for local musicians. ACL has always been a particularly good place to see the city’s own talent share the stage with the biggest names in music.
6. The people-watching. All are welcome, and it’s so much fun to see all ages, all styles, and all sorts of wild looks fill the park.
7. The fashion. Cowboy hats, glitter, boots, sequins, vintage tees—this is the most fun unofficial fashion show.
8. The food. Tacos, barbecue, ice cream and plenty of Austin favorites make the festival grounds feel like a mini food festival, too.
9. The flags. This iconic aspect of the festival is more than just a way to find your friends — it is entertainment.
10. The friends you attend with. Some of the best ACL memories have very little to do with who was onstage, and so much to do with the fun times spent with your pals.
11. The friends you meet there. Festivals have a wonderful way of turning strangers into temporary best friends.
12. The perfectly-timed golden hour. So many ACL photos look magical against the city’s iconic violet sky.
13. The giant sing-alongs. Nothing beats thousands of people singing the same chorus at the same time.
14. Hidden gems on smaller stages. Sometimes you discover some of the the best sets on stages you initially were just going to walk past.
15. The nostalgia. For longtime Austinites, ACL Fest is a living scrapbook of the city—and of who we were when we first started going.
16. The evolution. What began as a two-day, five-stage festival in 2002 has grown enormously while keeping music at its center.
17. The legends. Over the years, ACL Fest has welcomed artists ranging from Willie Nelson and Paul McCartney to The Cure and Billie Eilish.
18. The “I was there” moments. Every year seems to produce at least one performance that becomes part of ACL lore. The muddy festival years in ponchos, the band you saw before they got huge, the friend you ran into after ten years—ACL is as much about stories as it is about sets.

22. Austin Kiddie Limits. The festival has grown into a multigenerational Austin tradition with so much fun for young children.
23. The support for Austin Parks Foundation. ACL has contributed significantly to Austin’s parks; since 2006, festival funding has generated nearly $71 million for improvements to Zilker Park and parks across Austin.
24. The Bonus Tracks. Honestly, the interview sets and wild dance parties that take place at the Bonus Tracks are so engaging and a great spot to rest in the shade for a little break between live music.
25. The tradition. Twenty-five years later, ACL isn’t just a music festival. It’s one of those Austin traditions that has become part of the fabric of the city.
