Austin-based indie-pop band Foxtales has released their fifth EP, “night owl,” marking a comeback for frontman Jonathan Fox after a life-changing bike accident in March 2023 that left him with shattered vertebrae and multiple broken bones. The accident required Fox to take an extended break from music to focus on his recovery. After months of rehabilitation, Foxtales is set to showcase the music and resilience that shaped “night owl” with a performance at Mohawk on August 24.

Foxtales, which began as a solo project in Fox’s bedroom, has evolved into a dynamic band that blends indie rock with electronic influences. Fox describes the current lineup, together for about six months, as the “A team.” He reflects on his musical inspirations, drawing from artists like Phoenix, Beck, and Tame Impala, while maintaining his love for the sounds of the 60s and 70s. This eclectic mix has shaped Foxtales’ unique sound, appealing to a wide range of listeners.

Their new album is a blend of both old and new, with some tracks dating back to 2019. “Two of the songs are among the first I ever wrote for Foxtales, but they didn’t come together until now,” Fox shares. The album’s themes—overthinking, living in the moment, and grappling with life’s fragility—are deeply influenced by Fox’s recovery journey. The accident forced him to reassess not only his physical capabilities but also his approach to life and music. “I used to be all over the stage, jumping off kick drums. Now, I’m more mindful, but I’m slowly getting back to where I was,” Fox reflects.

Fox’s recovery has not only reshaped his physical approach to performing but has also deepened his understanding of what truly matters in life. “I realized how short and unpredictable life is, and I don’t want to waste time on things that don’t feel meaningful,” he says. Foxtales will perform at Mohawk Austin on August 24, where they will present a mix of new tracks, along with fan favorites and updated visual elements. Their latest album is available for streaming on Spotify and Apple Music. For more details on the event and ticket information, visit Mohawk’s website.
