Meet Kevin Ivester, the Gallerist Bringing Austin’s Art Community Together
The Ivester Contemporary founder creates opportunities for artists through exhibitions, collaboration and arts funding

At the heart of Kevin Ivester’s ethos is a profound phrase: “Texas is not a place; it’s a time.” He first heard it from Savannah Diaz, the managing director of his art gallery in East Austin, the Ivester Contemporary. “Everything is changing and evolving,” he elaborates, “and it’s really important for me to continue to stay aware of what’s being made so I can present work that is going to be cutting-edge.”
Displayed in his 2026 summer show are two pieces that he gleefully rotates 45 degrees on the wall. They were made by artist Anya Molyviatis (“Reverence” and “Weathering,” 2026) from colorful three-dimensional textiles that, at first glance, look like optical illusions. The other works in the exhibit reflect this same dedication to freshness and innovation. Ivester’s excitement for the present moment can be felt throughout the gallery, and it’s a feeling that’s been with him since he first entered the art world.

Finding a place in the local art scene
Kevin Ivester first set out to become a painter in Massachusetts, where he’s from, but he felt he could see his future laid out before him, like he could predict the exact galleries he’d eventually show his art in. “What drew me to Austin was just how beautiful it is … What kept me in Austin is my realization that there is also so much opportunity in the arts.”
After relocating in 2015, he became a regular at the Davis Gallery before landing a job there and eventually taking the helm as its director. Then, after gaining years of valuable experience, an opportunity arose. Two separate spaces came up for lease at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic that seemed perfect for opening a new gallery and frame shop. He took the leap and opened the Ivester Contemporary and East Side Picture Framing in the Canopy complex on Springdale Road, which he refers to as the “epicenter for the arts in Austin.”
From his new home base, he started collaborating with his fellow gallerists to bring the local community deeper into the art world. “People would show up to our galleries interested in what we were showing, but they didn’t know each other, so we established this really casual group called Friends of Galleries.”
This collective is known today for putting on the Austin Friends Fair, which brings together collections from across Texas and beyond to be seen on the national stage. They started in 2025 by bringing together 10 different galleries and showcasing them throughout the luxury hotel rooms of the Loren at Lady Bird Lake. Their event last May increased its curator count to 17, and Ivester is already eager to do it again next year.

Supporting the future of art in Austin
On top of all this, Ivester serves as the board chair for the Austin Arts Alliance (A3), an organization that collects donations and grants at the state and federal levels and redistributes them to individual artists and nonprofits. “I want to find a way to connect the corporate world in Austin, which is so strong and so stable, with the creative world,” he says fervently. “We’re working to become Austin’s local arts agency.”
All these projects are part of the present moment for Kevin Ivester. As for his future, there’s a lot to be excited about. If you ask him what’s ahead, he’ll likely tell you about his gallery’s next exhibit or the microgrants he’s giving to local artists. If there’s a place that needs Kevin Ivester, it’s Texas, and if Texas is a time, then artists can feel lucky that time is now.
