West Chelsea Contemporary proudly presents Through the Lens: Featuring Roberto Dutesco & The Wild Horses of Sable Island®, a landmark exhibition that brings Dutesco’s globally celebrated photographs to Texas for the first time. Joined by the works of renowned photographers Bob Gruen, Greg Davis, Raphael Mazzucco, Todd Murphy and Hunter Barnes, this collection highlights photography’s significance in the art world and pays tribute to the groundbreaking visionaries who elevate the discipline. From the untamed majesty of Sable Island and the vibrant cultures of Oaxaca to iconic moments from decades past, this exhibition underscores the enduring power of photography to inspire, captivate, and transform. Showcasing artists hanging in the homes of notable collectors such as Elton John, Yoko Ono, Tommy Hilfiger, Yolanda Hadid, and Rihanna, Through the Lens stands as a testament to the prestige and cultural significance of fine art photography, inviting viewers to engage with a medium celebrated by the world’s most discerning collectors and institutions.
Through the Lens brings together a remarkable roster of artists whose works span decades, cultures, and genres, celebrating photography’s ability to illuminate history, amplify voices, and preserve the beauty of our shared human experience. Photography collectors will recognize the incredible talents while burgeoning collectors discover why photography is key to any personal collection. Through the Lens invites you to engage with the visionaries who have shaped photography into an enduring and vital art form.

“It’s a feeling that I’m after —whether photographing a person or a place—of knowing that I caught a glimpse of silence and stillness so beautiful it only existed for that fleeting moment. This process gives me a sense of understanding of the people and places around me and how we’re connected through the nuances of humanity. In the space between my camera and my subjects, there’s a great sense of intimacy and vulnerability in which you’ll see the subjects for who and what they truly are.
My decade-long project with Daniel Johnston was that and more. He was a subject I wanted to study and capture repeatedly, as a fan and friend, each shoot a different experience. It was the most heavy, complicated, and excruciatingly beautiful project I’ve ever poured my heart into where we were both vulnerable at all times. The result is an extensive and poignant study of an extraordinary artist.” -Jung Kim
Born in Seoul, South Korea, Jung began her photography and printing studies at age 14 and fell in love with film and the darkroom. Jung attended Parsons School of Design in New York where she began photographing her musician and artist friends. While working as a photo research editor at magazines such as VOGUE, Jung spent most evenings in her neighborhood music venues on the Lower East Side where she discovered and photographed indie musicians and bands, often joining them on the road. Her most notable collaboration is with the legendary musician and artist Daniel Johnston, who she documented from 2008 to 2019. She was the subject of two photography books: here (2013) and IS ALWAYS (2023), both launching at SXSW. Jung resides in Brooklyn, New York.

Event Details
Inspired by visions of the Milky Way and Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms, the stars is an introspective, awe-inspiring journey into a matrix of light. Visitors move from total darkness to immersion in a theatrical constellation of 4,000 reactive points of light and an enveloping 496-channel sound design. Part meditation, part exploration, the stars, invites each visitor to explore traces of themselves in starlight, the universe, and those who have been here before us.
the stars is a non-seated, interactive performance installation. There are two ways to experience the production:
Open Universe — A self-guided visit to the immersive light and sound installation. You’ll have a scheduled entry time and can explore the space at your own pace. Like a museum or gallery, you decide how long to spend in the installation and when to exit. The Open Universe is appropriate for ages 12+.
Guided Experience — A 45-minute experience where an unseen narrator guides each visitor through their own personal journey of the precisely programmed installation. Each performance is for up to 8 people at a time. The Guided Experience is for ages 18+ only.
In both experiences, attendees stand, walk, or sit on the floor in the installation. There will be prolonged periods of absolute darkness and occasional loud noises and flashing lights.
