DAWA (Diversity Awareness and Wellness in Action), the innovative nonprofit dedicated to investing in BIPOC community and culture, is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a special comedy event, “Laughter is Medicine,” featuring legendary actor and comedian Tommy Davidson on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 7:30 p.m. at the Long Center.
Best known as one of the stars of the hit television show “In Living Color” along with featured credits in “Bamboozled” and “Black Dynamite,” Tommy Davidson’s exceptional range – from stand-up comedy and acting to versatile music accomplishments – has earned him a reputation as an extraordinary performer. Special local musical and comedy guests will accentuate Davidson’s 70-minute stand-up set for an unforgettable evening of culture and comedy. Tickets are now on sale.

The Nobelity Project and The Loren Hotel are thrilled to unveil “Light Work for Kenya,” a one-night gallery exhibit and sale on Saturday, Sept. 7, celebrating the hotel’s renovation of Austin’s historic Paggi House. The event will feature artwork by a distinguished group of artists and photographers to help fund The Nobelity Project’s construction of a new preschool at remote Oloile Primary in the shadows of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The show, curated by The Nobelity Project co-founder Turk Pipkin, will include works by visual artists Julie Speed, Terry Allen, Bob Schneider, Evan Voyles, Sam Yeates, Gareth Maguire, MM Pipkin, Darden Smith and Caroline Wright. Featured photographers include Dan Winters, Scott Newton, Danny Clinch, Gary Miller and noted African wildlife photographers Turk Pipkin, Emmanuel Jambo, Adam Bannister, Federico Veronesi and Rodney Bursiel.

Flatwater, the Austin-based nonprofit organization that provides mental health therapy for those affected by a cancer diagnosis, has announced its annual fundraising event, Flatwater’s Dam That Cancer presented by TYLER’S, which will take place on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. This year marks the 15th anniversary of Dam That Cancer (DTC), one of Austin’s most successful and longest-running annual SUP fundraising events, in which 230 select participants will complete a 21-mile course on stand-up paddleboards from Lake Austin’s Mansfield Dam to Tom Miller Dam near Hula Hut. This year, Flatwater aims to raise a record-breaking $1.4 million to support the foundation’s mission of providing mental health therapy for Central Texans affected by cancer.

CARY, the Council on At-Risk Youth, is hosting its Hats in For Cary fundraising event on Thursday, October 24, from 6-9 pm to celebrate its 25th anniversary and raise money to help fund ongoing services and mental health programs for their students. The event will feature six teams competing in different challenges, including darts, pool, and putt Vegas. Additionally, CARY will provide food and beverages and hold a silent auction where people can win fun prizes.
All proceeds from the event will go toward funding ongoing services and mental health programming for the students. Since its founding in 1999, CARY has served over 27,000 students by empowering them to find their voice and become successful community members. CARY currently serves 1,900 students in 19 middle and high schools across three school districts in Central Texas.

All net proceeds will go directly to Mobile Loaves & Fishes, which provides permanent, affordable housing and employment opportunities for the chronically homeless through its Community First!
