A restored Queen Anne Victorian originally built in Marlin, Texas, is now for sale in Austin’s Bouldin Creek neighborhood. Constructed in 1890, the Marlin House was first located in the former hot springs resort town before being restored and relocated to Mary Street following remodels completed in 2009 and 2011. Actor Elijah Wood, known for his roles in the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the TV shows “Yellowjackets” and “Wilfred,” purchased the home in 2012 and owned it until 2020.

Interior details and design

The four-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath home at 608 W. Mary St. spans 3,285 square feet and is listed for $3.195 million. Inside, 11-foot ceilings, heartwood longleaf pine floors and hand-carved millwork underscore the home’s Victorian origins. Original features and carefully recreated details—including coffered ceilings, elaborately cased doorways, artichoke finials and replica period lighting—reflect extensive historical research and a commitment to architectural integrity.

The main level is arranged for both daily living and entertaining, with two formal parlors, a dining room, a powder bath and a chef’s kitchen. Carrara and Statuary Italian marble countertops define the space, complemented by custom cabinetry and high-end appliances, including a Viking Professional gas range, Miele dishwasher and Bosch wine refrigerator.

Upstairs, three en suite bedrooms are filled with natural light from wood-encased, low-e double-hung windows. The top floor is devoted to a second primary suite, anchored by a custom steel-and-glass window that frames panoramic views of downtown Austin, about one mile away.

Thoughtful updates inside and out

While the exterior retains its 19th-century character, the home has been fully modernized with updated plumbing and electrical systems, full HVAC, tankless hot water and a structurally engineered third-floor addition.

Outdoor amenities include a newly constructed 325-square-foot screened porch, a landscaped lawn and a pool designed for both entertaining and everyday use. A detached two-car garage includes EV charging, with additional private parking for two to three vehicles.

Listed by KC Kitchen, the Marlin House remains a carefully preserved example of Victorian architecture adapted for contemporary Austin living.
