Austin Events Still Planned Following SXSW Cancelation

For some, the cancelation of SXSW was a devastating shock. To others, it was an obvious answer to a difficult problem. The rest are just glad that it didn’t come down to 20/20 hindsight regarding the worrisome spread of Coronavirus disease, COVID-19, and the migration of hundreds of thousands of visitors to Austin’s doorstep.

Despite the choice to shut down the official fest, numerous organizers, performers and venues have decided to keep their doors open, allowing for a surge of independent events to rise and give support to our deeply affected industry members. If you’re still looking to fill the gaps left on your calendar and get your spring break fix with top notch music, food and more, check into these community happenings that will ease the sting of an Austin without South By, if only a little.

HOWEVER: While our community’s ability to rally together is always an incredible sight, it’s important to take precautions. According to the CDC, the best ways to prevent exposure while you’re out on the town include washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, covering your mouth and nose when needing to sneeze or cough, cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces (like your phone!) and if you’re feeling unwell – simply just stay home. There’s a balance between supporting the hard working members of our community hit hard by the cancelation of SXSW and other aspects of the Coronavirus outbreak and avoiding actions that will make the problem worse. We want to bring our readers the best of their options, which for many may be to ride this thing out at home and away from crowds. After all, the best of everything Austin has to offer will be there when we get to the other side.
