Now in its eighth year, this event honors six exceptional Texas artists whose work reflects innovation, excellence and a commitment to reshaping perceptions of disability through the arts.

Presented annually, the Artist of the Year Awards centers artists with disabilities whose work sparks dialogue, innovation, and inclusion. Honorees represent a wide range of disciplines—including visual art, music, dance, performance, and media—and are recognized for challenging convention, uplifting communities, and redefining creative leadership in Texas.

The LBJ Presidential Library will celebrate Austin Museum Day on Sunday, September 21, with a free community event honoring Hispanic Heritage Month.

Event highlights

• Live Music: Performance by Austin-based band Sofrito y Su Melao
• Crafts for All Ages: Make musical instruments, bracelets, Frida Kahlo-inspired flower crowns, and piñata art

Get ready for a grown-up twist on the science fair on Monday, Sept. 23, from 6–9 p.m. at Vacancy Brewing. Hosted by Turbo Photo Film Lab, this first-of-its-kind event swaps baking soda volcanoes for photo prints, trifold boards and plenty of glitter glue.

Competitors submit 1–2 photos ahead of time, which Turbo Photo will print and provide on-site. Each participant then assembles a display for categories like Very Important Pup, Happy Accidents, Food and Drink Sciences, Fight the Power, and Don’t Label Me. The crowd becomes both judge and spectator, voting for their favorites. Winners earn blue ribbons, bragging rights and $75 Turbo Photo gift cards.

It’s free to spectate and vote, while competitors can join in the fun for $6 (Turbo Club members compete free).

The Roots and Revival exhibition weekend opens Friday with an invite-only welcome party at The Masur Building in Lockhart, offering a preview of the show. A limited 100 tickets will be sold in advance on Eventbrite, first come, first served.

On Saturday, artists and sponsors will gather for a brunch at The Birdie House, followed by the public debut of the exhibition from noon to 7 p.m. The show continues Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

An invite-only rooftop VIP party will also be held Saturday at The Masur Building’s rooftop bar.
